Jakarta Provincial Government Increases Tidal Flood Mitigation in Coastal Areas

The Jakarta Provincial Government has made various efforts to anticipate potential tidal flooding in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta, which is predicted to occur between May 14-22 and May 28-31, 2026.

operate pumps as well as various efforts

Head of Water Resources Agency, Ika Agustin Ningrum said her party has prepared various anticipatory measures to minimize the impact on settlements and community activities in coastal areas.

Be Vigilant: 12 Areas Potentially Affected by Tidal Flooding

"The agency, through North Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency, continues to maintain alert and operate pumps as well as various efforts to anticipate potential tidal flooding," she said.

Currently, 171 stationary pumps are on standby in 56 locations across North Jakarta to anticipate flooding caused by tidal flooding. Mobile pumps are also being deployed to reach locations not served by stationary pumps.

Several pump houses and water gates in coastal areas that are on standby include the Marina Water Gate, Kali Asin Pump or Polder, Pluit Pump House, Ancol Pump, PIK Junction Pump, Muara Angke Pump, Fish Market Pump, Tanjungan Pump, and Kamal Polder Pump.

"The Blue Troops are also deployed to guard and carry out routine monitoring to ensure that field conditions remain under control," she added.

Ika explained that land subsidence is a factor causing the increased potential for tidal flooding, thus having a major impact on environmental conditions in Jakarta, especially in coastal areas.

"Land subsidence can expand floodplain areas due to the failure of drainage channels. This makes an area more vulnerable to flooding during rainy seasons," she explained.

According to her, this condition prevents water from flowing by gravity, necessitating the assistance of pumps and a polder system to control flooding. She added that land subsidence in Jakarta's coastal areas also increases the potential for tidal flooding and can trigger infrastructure damage.

"Buildings or structures can experience cracks and tilt, and suboptimal water channels can lead to damage to road infrastructure," she added.

The Jakarta Water Resources Agency continues to monitor land subsidence by building monitoring stations at a number of locations.

"The existence of this land subsidence monitoring station also serves as a risk management for land subsidence disasters which can cause tidal flooding," she continued.

The Jakarta Water Resources Agency urges residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant during periods of potential tidal flooding. They can also monitor tidal flooding updates via the bpbd.jakarta.go.id/gelombanglaut website, the JAKI app, or by calling 112 in case of an emergency.

As for information, based on modeling of land subsidence, sea level rise, coastal elevation, and the tides in Jakarta Bay, the high tide, or tidal surge, is predicted to reach 0.69 meters above mean sea level (MSL).

Areas potentially affected by tidal flooding include Tanjungan, Muara Angke, Muara Baru, Pasar Ikan, Ancol Marina and JIS, Tanjung Priok and Kali Baru, and Marunda.

The modeling is also said to be subject to change due to conditions of embankment construction, embankment leaks, and non-tidal factors such as sea level anomalies and high waves caused by wind.
